Why give stock instead of cash?
When you give appreciated stock you've held for more than a year directly to SOLU (instead of selling it first and donating the proceeds), two things happen: you avoid the capital-gains tax you would have paid on the appreciation, and you receive a charitable deduction for the full fair-market value of the stock on the day of transfer.
For a stock that has doubled since you bought it, that's a meaningful difference. We frequently see partners give the same dollar value via stock instead of cash and increase the impact of their gift by 15–25% after-tax.
How to make a stock gift
Step 1 — Email hello@soluisrael.org with the security name (or ticker), the number of shares, and your brokerage. We'll reply within one business day with our brokerage transfer instructions: DTC number, account number, and account name.
Step 2 — Share those instructions with your broker. Most brokers process the transfer in 3–10 business days.
Step 3 — Once we confirm receipt, you'll get an acknowledgment letter from us listing the security, number of shares, and date of transfer (the IRS requires the donor to determine fair-market value; your broker's confirmation establishes the date, and we acknowledge receipt).
For year-end giving, please initiate the transfer by mid-December — settlement can take a week or more, and a stock transfer counts for the tax year it actually clears in our account, not the day you authorize it.
Other gifts of assets
We also accept mutual funds, ETFs, and (with advance coordination) gifts of cryptocurrency, real estate, and privately-held business interests. Each of these requires more conversation than a public-stock transfer; please email us first so we can walk you through the process and confirm we can accept the asset under our 501(c)(3).
